Spanish Club and National Honor Society Continue to Help Hillcrest Elementary

In the past couple of years the Spanish Club has accomplished a lot. This year they are continuing their service by helping Hillcrest Elementary School.
The Spanish Club has been fundraising this past year in order to donate books to Hillcrest Elementary School. Senior Jen Gutierrez is the president of the Spanish Club and was incredibly grateful for all the donations.
“The Spanish Club really wanted to help Hillcrest because we knew they were in need,” said Gutierrez. Gutierrez went on to express her excitement on bringing the books to the school. “I’m so grateful for all the donations and I’m beyond excited to be bringing them to Hillcrest after school. It’s really going to help the students.”
Spanish teacher Loyda Lugo-Goff is extremely pleased with the amount of donations collected for Hillcrest. Lugo-Goff said “We were able to purchase 200 new books from Scholastic from the money that we raised with Dimes in a Botella. With help from the National Honor Society we were then able to collect about 200 more books from the community.”
When asked why the Spanish Club wanted to help Hillcrest, Lugo-Goff explained “The Spanish Club tries to help schools that have a large hispanic population. This year we wanted to make literacy a priority in these schools and help better our community. This was our big project for the year.”
Lugo-Goff went on and reflected on the Dimes in a Botella fundraiser. “Last year we took an ESL teacher from Hillcrest to the scholastic warehouse and spent three hours buying books. Last year we collected about 500 dollars and it was great that the whole school was so invested in a cause. We are going to present the books to the teachers during a faculty meeting.”
Vice President Alexis Vasquez is excited to be doing more donations for Hillcrest. “Spanish Club is doing the donations because we are helping out a school that is in need,” said Vasquez. “They don’t have a lot so last year we decided to donate pencils and this year we raised money to purchase books and had donations from the community. Today the officers are going to Hillcrest to showcase all the donations to the teachers.”
Spanish Club is obviously making a difference. By doing incredible service projects like this they are helping to better our communities and make a difference.
